Zinc
Zinc is an essential
mineral that
serves a number of functions in the human body. It plays a role in the
cellular metabolism, serves a role in numerous enzymatic reactions,
aids in wound healing and immune function, protects against cellular
damage from free-radicals and low levels of Zinc have also been linked
to depression.
The Polish Journal of Pharmacology (2003;55:1143-7) reported the
results of a human study in which Zinc supplementation provided
beneficial results for depressed individuals who were taking
antidepressant medications. The Journal of Neural Transmission
published another study, Antidepressant-like activity of zinc: further
behavioral and molecular evidence. This study showed that zinc can have
anti-depressant effects by increasing a brain protein called BDNF
(Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). Since chronic stress can lower
BDHF levels in the brain it may benefit to supplement with Zinc if you
suffer from low mood states and/or depression.
